Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.
I. Professional Development Goal
My professional development goal is to address the diverse learning needs of students through reading comprehension and writing strategies.
The personal need that this goal will address is the need to expand my professional knowledge of both writing and reading comprehension strategies along with applying my knowledge and learned strategies in the classroom. This goal will benefit my students in several ways. First, the strategies I learn will create “habits of mind” to my students by helping them to understand their own thinking (RIBT 3.1). For example, by using the eight different types of thinking maps students will understand the different types of thinking they do. As a result, when students are asked to use a specific type of thinking (i.e. describe, classify, compare/contrast, sequence etc.) they will automatically associate and apply a specific thinking map with the type of thinking asked of them. Secondly, my goal will also allow students to acquire writing skills that will teach them how to organize (via. Prewriting and thinking maps) their writing along with understanding the writing process and the steps needed to be taken to complete a well written piece. In addition, this learning goal acknowledges the individual differences of students (RIBT 4.1) because the strategies I will apply can be used for all different learning levels. Lastly, my learning goal benefits my school because it follows the improvement plan. This goal addresses the schools goals of“ holding students accountable for quality writing,”“providing a variety of resources and leveled reading excerpts to support the development of citing supporting details” and “model and deliberately teach format and expectations for quality writing in all disciplines.”
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
One strategy I will use to meet this goal is to attend conferences/workshops and training sessions that are geared towards teaching reading and writing strategies that I can apply in my classroom. This will help be to attain my goal because there are many workshops offered that specifically address teaching strategies and techniques for reading and writing. These workshops can help me to learn new ways to teach reading and writing to my students who all have diverse learning needs. Therefore, my students will improve their reading and writing skills both in general and in my specific content area.
The second strategy I will use to meet my goal is through development work. By participating in development work I will be able to help develop instructional units, assessments and curricula. Through the development of these types of work I can make assure that they include strategies for teaching and strengthening both students’ reading and writing skills. The development of curricula and instructional units will require the teaching, application, and practicing of these necessary skills. In addition, the development of assessment will enable these skills to be formally and properly evaluated so that further development of curricula and instruction can be modified to meet the needs and abilities of the students.
